Fire,
Safety Scenario A plant covering a large surface area was using certain chemical
products, as well as dangerous gases in its production. It was equipped
with visual and sound alarms so employees could quickly evacuate the
premises in case of emergency. Also, some of their employees were deaf. Problem Key employees, specializing in maintenance and safety, were often on the
move in areas where there were no alarm systems. Deprived of precious
information, they therefore were unable to detect the causes of a
pre-alarm; minutes later a general alarm would be heard, resulting in the
evacuation of the whole plant. Those who were deaf also had to be alerted,
especially when they worked in areas without an alarm system. Needless to
say, time–response in these cases is vital. Management wanted to avoid
all unnecessary costs related to false alarms, resulting in a general
evacuation while continuing to protect its employees adequately. S Setting up Nordicom’s
<Protocol Converter> linked to a fire alarm panel using a private
transmitter which relays information instantly to pagers given to those
key people as well as to those who were deaf. In most cases companies that already have light warnings, speakers, or
intercoms can hook up the pager system to fully complete their system. |
